With thanks to the overwhelming support and generosity of the Stephenville community, the Beadbug has donated funds to the Themba Club, situated on the South Coast of South Africa and primarily initiated to support street children orphaned, abandoned or simply destitute because of dire circumstances. The organization has grown to include Prevention and Outreach Programs to the desperately poor in and around the area.
In June 2008, $2000 from the sale of Beadbug items was handed over to Trish Brauteseth, Chairperson: The Themba Club. The funds will be used to feed and support the Zaza family and other families in similar situations.
The Zaza family is a child headed household of four children who live in a rural community on the outskirts of Ramsgate. Both parents have died of HIV/Aids related illnesses. The family was brought to the attention of the Themba Club by a neighbor, who was unable to sustain the children, but saw their need for assistance.
The oldest child is a girl of 17, and she takes care of her two sisters aged 15 and 12 and their younger brother , aged 9. None of the children had birth certificates, so they were unable to apply for any State grant. The Themba Club has arranged the necessary documentation , and they have now applied for birth certificates – once these arrive, they will be in a position to apply for State grants. This process can often take well over a year before finalization.
Funds received by the Beadbug will be utilized in this interim period to ensure that the children go to school and have some food to eat. Money will specifically be used to pay for school fees, buy school uniforms and provide weekly food parcels.
